PBS Video line hits stores,
major retailers enlistedOriginally published in Current, Issue 17, 1990
By Jack RobertielloEpisodes of American Playhouse, Frugal Gourmet, Nature, Newton's Apple, This Old House and Wall Street Week will lead the new PBS Home Video line into major video retail stores beginning September 26 [1990].
The programs are being distributed by Pacific Arts Video, the Public Broadcasting Service's video partner since February. The two organizations agreed that Pacific Arts would negotiate with producers of programs seen on public television and recommended for distribution by PBS.
PAV unveiled the initial PBS Video offerings at the Video Software Dealers Association show in August, and PBS announced a second group in late September for December release.
Two programs produced by Bill Moyers, Jim Lehrer's My Heart, Your Heart, Loving Relationships with Leo Buscaglia, Creation of the Universe and We Shall Overcome, complete the 12-title September release list.
Fifteen Years with MacNeil-Lehrer, episodes of American Patchwork, Newton's Apple, This Old House and two episodes of Nature will make up the package of six videos released in December.
The videos will be sold for $19.95 in stores, through PBS stations and through a toll-free telephone number.
PBS Video will issue a complete version of The Astronomers, a six-hour series produced by KCET in Los Angeles that will be telecast in spring 1991.
Public stations that want to purchase videos to distribute as premiums to subscribers will be able to buy videos with a "deep discount,'' according to PBS.
