NPR announces hiring of Washington Post editor as managing editor, digital news
NPR memo from Dick Meyer and Kinsey Wilson about appointment of Mark Stencel as managing editor, digital news, June 18, 2009.
All,
We are very happy for NPR that Mark Stencel will be joining us as the new Managing Editor, Digital News beginning July 20. Mark is one of the most experienced, versatile, serious and well-liked news leaders of his generation. His mix of experience in breaking news, political reporting, digital innovation, technology leadership and the business is wholly unique and impressive.
After a long run with The Washington Post, Mark joined Congressional Quarterly in 2005. He is currently the Executive Editor and Deputy Publisher of Governing magazine and Governing.com, where he also writes their technology column. Before that, he was Managing Editor, Newsroom at CQ.
Mark began his time at the Post in one of the great first-jobs in journalism – David Broder’s researcher. After a tour at The News & Observer in Raleigh, Mark came back to the Post in 1996 to run their online political coverage. At the dawn of the 21st century, Mark did a tour on the business side as V.P., Multimedia at Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive. He returned to the fun side of the Post as Senior Editor, Continuous News. He is the author of a well-regarded book on politics, Peepshow: Media and Politics in an Age of Scandal, with Larry J. Sabato and S. Robert Lichter.
While at the Post, Mark had a daily on-air run at WTOP. He majored in Russian Studies at the University of Virginia, but claims to have spent all his time at the college radio station.
Mark will be a terrific partner for the irrepressible David Sweeney and for the digital news team led by the equally irrepressible Jeffrey Katz. He will make great contributions to NPR and we are proud to have him on board.
